Maya is a 1st year resident in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program at UCI.

What are your OSH interests/research focus? 

Prior work on syphilis/bicillin led me to be interested in drivers of antimicrobial pipeline instability -- environmental/industrial hygiene-related, political/historical, financial, and other systems level factors. I have also enjoyed a wide range of other topics from hospital emergency preparedness to bystander hemorrhage control training to obesity research, so I am looking forward to exploring more in occupational environmental medicine!

What is your motivation for being in the field of Public Health/Occupational Health?

Throughout internal medicine residency I was fascinated by how strongly my patients' health was impacted by systems level factors outside my clinician sphere of "control" of clinic and hospital. I wanted the tools to address those factors both on a wider scale and in a preventive rather than purely reactive manner. With the masters training and total worker health mindset, occupational environmental medicine was the perfect fit.

Fun fact or something interesting you'd like to share about yourself: 

I grew up mostly in Alaska so I love being outdoors and going cross country skiing, but downhill skiing scares me :)
