Certificate Program

Workplace Safety & Health Professional Certificate

By choosing this program, you will have become part of one of the most comprehensive and rigorous certificate programs available. If you are looking for a thorough understanding of the challenges of workplace safety and health and the knowledge to be able to mitigate and/or overcome them ‐ this is your program. Looking for an easy way to get a certificate? ‐ this is not the program for you. The curriculum includes core requirements and electives that allow participants to design the program best suited to their needs.

Though there are no educational requirements to enter the program, some classes require math and/or science knowledge and/or skills. Participants must also have professional level English language proficiency in reading comprehension, vocabulary, written expression and oral presentation. Candidates must attend all sessions and pass written exams to receive credit towards SCERC Workplace Safety and Health Professional Certificate. Elect the Workplace Safety & Health Professional Certificate or upgrade to the Hazardous Substance Specialty.

Most courses completed through the OSHA Training Institute at UC San Diego are accepted as either alternatives for required courses or as electives if taken within the last two years. Credit is determined on a case‐by‐case basis.

Though there are no educational requirements to enter the program, some classes require math and/or science knowledge and/or skills. The Program does not provide remedial classes. If necessary, you are expected to bring your skills up to the required level on your own.

As a hedge against future fee increases, if you wish, you can pay in advance for either All Core Required Courses (leaving only the electives to be paid as you register for them) or All Core Required Courses Plus Electives.

Advanced Payment Discount (Core) -- $3,307 (covers all core requirements)

Advanced Payment Discount (Core Plus) -- $3,844 (covers all core requirements and electives)

Compare:

Total Cost for These Courses at Standard Rates - about $5,184
Advanced Payment Discount of Core Courses plus electives  - $3,844

If you choose the discount advanced payment, you must let us know you would like to register for each course at least 10 working days prior to the first day of class or be subject to a $75 late registration fee.

If the course you would like to take exceeds the requirement for a core course or elective, the Certificate Program will only pay for the portion required for the certificate. For example, the Certificate Program requires 8 hours of Confined Space. If you wish to register for a 32-hour Confined Space Course, the Certificate Program will pay for 25% of the registration fee and you will be responsible for the rest. (The exception to this is the following: If we do not offer a course within 18 months of your request for a specific course, that meets, but does not exceed, the certificate requirement, the Certificate Program will pay for the longer course. In this case, the Certificate Program has the option to count some or all of the extra hours toward the electives requirement.)

If you choose the discount advanced payment and cancel your enrollment in:

A core required course without at least 10 working days prior to the first day of class, or you are a "no show," the SCERC will have met its obligation to pay for that class and you will be responsible for payment of registration fees should you enroll in the class again.

An elective without at least 10 working days prior to the first day of class, or you are a "no show," the SCERC will have met its obligation to pay for that number of elective hours and you will be responsible for payment of registration fees for the next equivalent number of hours of electives.

You must attend all sessions (and be present at least 90% of the time) and pass written exams to receive credit toward the Certificate.

Some course substitutions may be acceptable. They must be approved in advance in writing.
